Valve position sensors

February 2003 Sensors & Transducers

IFM Electronic's IND valve position sensors are certified for use down to level Zone 0 hazardous areas, allowing them to be used without zener barriers, reducing costs and simplifying installation. Actuator pucks for the IND range have been redesigned to provide greater versatility, as well as giving a clearer visual indication of the valve position.

IND units comprise two separate inductive proximity sensors in a single, double insulated IP67 housing. One sensor provides a signal when the valve is open, the other when it is closed. The units are invaluable for confirming that power operated valves and manual valves are in the appropriate position for correct and safe operation in all types of process plants.

The units are designed for operation from DC supplies ranging from 10 to 36 V and are supplied with either an integral 2 m connecting cable or by means of a plug connection. Both versions incorporate LED status indicators that simplify installation and adjustment.

A range of operating pucks is suitable for use with all versions of the IND sensor and fit directly on the operating shaft of the valve or actuator. Hole spacings conform to ISO 5211, ensuring compatibility with virtually all installations. The pucks are moulded from black solvent-resistant plastic and feature threaded metal inserts, which operate the IND sensors.

Yellow plastic inserts give a clear visual display of valve position, and both the metal and plastic inserts can be fitted in alternative positions according to the requirements of the application.
