Thermal mass flowmeters for gas applications

February 2003 Flow Measurement & Control

The FlexMASSter ST98 and ST98L supports virtually all industrial gas or air measurement needs: digester gas, natural gas, air or hydrogen flow. Because there are no orifices, bearings or seals to foul or fail, FlexMASSter is particularly well suited for dirty gas measurement. Infrared touch controls permit external transmitter programming without compromising continuous explosion programming and fault diagnostics is done by means of a handheld plug-in interface (model FC88).

The standard aluminium enclosure meets the requirements for use in hazardous environments Class I and II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups B, C, D, E, F, and G and EEx d llB, and is corrosion protected to IP66.

Available from Protea Automation Solutions, the ST98 and ST98L simplify mass flow monitoring with a single process penetration, eliminating the temperature/pressure transmitters and flow computers required by other non-mass flowmeter technologies, such as differential pressure and turbines. The equipment carries a one-year warranty.

The monitor's flexibility provides solutions for many applications involving wastewater aeration and digesters, landfill vapour or biogas recovery, plant compressed air, natural gas monitoring, hydrogen monitoring, heavy industrial HVAC systems, stack scrubbers, flare headers and combustion air in boilers. The true performance test of any flowmeter is accuracy, repeatability and response time. These units offer an accuracy level of ±1% of reading, plus 0,5% of full scale. Response time is a rapid 2,5 seconds time constant for decreasing flow. Repeatability is ±0,5% of reading.

FCI's thermal dispersion technology is employed enabling the instruments to meet precision process requirements under difficult conditions. Modular electronics feature a powerful multiprocessor design, high resolution A/D converter and flash memory. The main processor board contains isolated precision 16-bit D-A analog outputs and RS232 serial port. 4 to 20 mA, 0 to 5 and 0 to 10 V d.c. output signals can also be provided. The power supply accepts a wide range of input voltages for applications worldwide without jumpers or switches.
