Level Measurement & Control

New ultrasonic level transmitters

January 2003 Level Measurement & Control

LTH Electronics has produced a new range of competitively priced ultrasonic transmitters and transducers for use on liquids, sludge and granular solids. The transmitters will provide an industry standard 4-20 mA output as a level or distance signal.

The compact Smartcost ultrasonic level transmitter has been designed for the use in tanks, basins and canals and is suitable for use in applications where the temperature can be up to 80°C. The polypropylene enclosure makes the Smartcost transmitter suitable for use in aggressive chemicals or liquids.

The IP65 version of the Smartcost transmitter features calibration buttons in the connection head of the transmitter enabling easy calibration. Calibration is performed by pressing the two buttons in a pre-arranged sequence (when this transmitter is used just as a two-threshold transmitter - for minimum and maximum levels). For more complex applications the Smartcost transmitter can be configured by a PC through the RS485 port using the 'LC' software enabling the user to set up minimum and maximum thresholds, pump controls or self-diagnostic alarms.

The IP65 surface mounting swing controller has been designed as a general-purpose controller for use with one or two ultrasonic level sensors from either the PTU or Smart series. A versatile unit, it is able to perform four different functions - levels, differential level, open channel flow and pump control, with configuration via the front panel keypad. The device is suitable for use with either the PTU or Smart family of ultrasonic sensors with communication by the RS485 communication port. It has two isolated 4 to 20 mA current outputs and five relay outputs, fully programmable through the front panel keypad.

By using the PTU series of transducers with the swing control unit, configuration and calibration is performed on the swing controller - and the system will measure and control level, differential level, open channel flow measurement and control of up to five pumps. The PTU series of ultrasonic level transducers are supplied with 3 m connection cables and red and yellow LEDs for indicating correct operation. Their IP68 polypropylene enclosures make these transducers suitable for use in aggressive chemicals or liquids and with granular solids.
