The quest for intelligent flexible telemetry systems has become more and more prominent around the world. Telemetry systems are now required to have the capability to convey extensive control data as well as supply large amounts of information for engineered systems, with ease, through all available communication mediums. Rural applications are expensive and demand that maintenance cost be kept at a minimum through systems being able to be programmed and configured remotely.

Supervisory and Control Engineering can offer such a system and believes that the SCADAPack series will fulfil this demand in the telemetry and control industry with great success. The SCADAPack line of products is a family of compact programmable controllers that are specially designed and optimised for control, scada and telemetry applications.

These products are built to military standards, which make them suitable for the harsh conditions in Africa and also provide wider temperature range, more robust transient protection, and lower operating power than factory floor PLCs.

A comprehensive CPU range provides complete control functionality. All members of the SCADAPack Series can be programmed in Relay Ladder Logic, multitasking C (ANSI C) and/or IEC 61131-3 programming suite, provide up to 32 PID controllers for feedback control when programmed with Ladder Logic or unlimited PID blocks when programmed with IEC 61131-3, and can be easily expanded for larger I/O counts of up to 700 I/O. The REALFLO package makes gas flow calculations easy to set up. These features provide the capability for high-tech control in the most remote places imaginable.

Realtime communications using the industry-standard Modbus protocol simplify integration with scada software, MMIs, DCS systems and intelligent instrumentation.

This system offers everything necessary for remote monitoring and control applications and can also be programmed and configured remotely.

All SCADAPack communication ports can be used with any type of leased-line or dial-up modems, spread-spectrum radios, cellular transceivers or communication to another device through various protocols. The SCADAPack series' highly recommended store and forward feature limits the requirement for costly repeaters. This feature, together with the SCADALog and SCADAserver functionality, allows the communication link to be down for an extensive period without loss of any data. The SCADALog feature stores data for extensive periods and can be uploaded remotely when the communication link has been re-established. This feature is certainly a huge benefit for the rural situation found not only in South Africa but also in the rest of Africa.
