Compact and powerful HMI/controllers

November 2002 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has added two new Simatic-C7 devices to its family of control systems for controlling and HMI. Simatic C7-613 is a low-cost device equipped with a four-line text display and an especially compact design; Simatic C7-635 keypad has a pixel-graphics 5,7-inch blue-mode display and features high performance even for extensive automation tasks thanks to a powerful two-processor solution.

The especially compact Simatic C7-613 control system comes equipped with a 313C CPU from the new compact series of the Simatic-S7-300 controllers - with 32 KB user memory and integrated I/Os. The display has four softkeys and ten programmable function keys. The text display and CPU are configured and programmed with standard STEP 7 software - without any additional software needed to program the HMI (human machine interface) functions.

Simatic C7-635 Keypad with its powerful dual-processor solution CPU 314C-2DP - also from the compact series of Simatic S7-300 controllers - features 64 KB user memory as well as integrated I/Os. As opposed to the touch-panel version, this device has a keypad with fourteen additional programmable softkeys and ten function keys. The HMI component corresponds to the OP170B operator panel and features high performance even for extensive HMI tasks. The user interface of the pixel-graphics operator panel with a 5,7-inch blue-mode display can be freely configured. Thanks to a number of online languages, the new control system is ready for use around the world. Aside from the standard characters, for example, the system also offers Cyrillic and several Asian character sets.

The new Simatic C7-613 control systems and C7-635 keypad have 24 digital and five analog inputs, of which one PT 100 input, in addition to 16 digital and two analog outputs as well as the integrated technological functions Count, Measure and Control. C7-635 Keypad also features the function 'Controlled positioning'. The devices are flexibly expandable with modules from the S7-300 range - both externally and directly on the rear panel. Thanks to retentive data management on the micro memory card (MMC), the maintenance-free devices do not need a backup battery. Data can be written to and read from the MMC for archive and recipe management. Command times are faster than in the previous model, enabling shorter machine cycle times. A printer interface is integrated in the Simatic C7-635 keypad for documenting process data. The device is also equipped with a Profibus DP interface for communications.

Simatic C7 control systems with an integrated HMI unit save space, save time and cut costs in setting up, assembling, wiring and engineering compared to similar modular solutions - and are priced about 20% less.
