25 September 2002 will be a day remembered by many a visitor to the Control Roadshow in the Vaal Triangle. Two unusual exhibits at the control and instrumentation show drew much attention and discussion by way of a powerboat and a sports car. The boat was a display of a new junior formula now currently growing in South Africa, and the property of Buks Brits of Rand Water. Buks' 12-year-old daughter, yes I did say 12, is the pilot of this powerful machine, and we are told she reaches speeds of up to 80 km per hour on the water.
Entering the exhibition also proved very distracting, at least to all those needing to pause and admire the sleek Italian curves of a full-blooded 12-cylinder Lamborghini Diablo sponsored by Laser Measurement. Four lucky draw winners were treated to an outing with Laser M in this amazing machine, and judging by the 'wrap-around' smile on their faces when they returned, it was quite an experience.
We did manage to focus on the exhibition as well, and the largest available venue in the area was once again fully attended by exhibitors and visitors alike. New technology and new equipment is always a key focus at these one-day shows. New projects and maintenance both benefit from having current international technology brought to their doorstep and often uncover revolutionary new methods to solve problems.
The exhibition at the Emfuleni Club in Vanderbijlpark saw over 46 exhibitors this year and included exhibits from: Adroit Technologies, Anglo Allied Engineering, Atlas Industrial Systems, Asco/Joucomatic, Autotech Weighing Systems, Bently & Nevada, Burkert Contromatic, Channels Measurement, Citect SA, Control Techniques, Corel Instr & Control, Danfoss, Ernest Lowe ELCO, Festo, Flexible Electronic Systems, Flowserve, Futuristix, GC Baars, Ind Auto & Control, IDX Online, IPC Africa, KAB Instruments, Krohne, Kubler Africa, Loadtech, Mega Measurement, National Instruments, Newco Instruments, Novicom, PREI Instrumentation, Shorrock Automation, Spectrum Communication, Staro Process Control, Streamworks, Thermo Ramsey, TM Automation, Tim Controls, Valve & Automation, Vega, Wika Instruments, Wirsam Scientific, WNIP, Yokogawa SA.
Two more exhibitions are on the calendar for this year, one in Mossel Bay and one in the Northern Cape. With a busy schedule around the country it is not often that we get to the very remote areas. From past experience, however, it is always heartening to travel to these remote areas where the end users really appreciate the effort incurred by all who make the trip to these communities.
Next year's schedule around the country has recently been finalised, and is available from the Penmac website.
