The TopCal S, one of the latest product releases from leading instrumentation specialist Endress+Hauser, is a pH measurement device that automatically cleans and calibrates itself as soon as it detects build-up and other interferences on its electrode.
Developed specifically for use in critical pH measuring applications - where sensors must be continually cleaned, calibrated and serviced to ensure accurate operation - the TopCal S incorporates fully automatic cleaning and calibration functions that guarantee rapid, accurate measuring point availability through pre-set cleaning and calibration cycles, during which the TopCal S adapts itself to each individual process using freely definable programs.
These cycles can be triggered automatically either by the process check system from its integrated electrode monitor, or the sensor check system (SCS). When interval measurement is required, the electrode need only be inserted briefly into the medium to record a measurement, greatly increasing its operating life in aggressive media.
"TopCal S truly takes responsibility for sensitive pH measurement," says product manager Jacques Fouche. "It even features a comprehensive safety system that warns you with regard to manual maintenance - such as filling the cleaner or buffer or replacing electrodes - well in advance. Without a doubt, the major advantage of the TopCal S is cost saving. Fouche points out that the device costs less than half the price of the average automated pH measurement device. "This translates into full return on investment between six months and two years," says Fouche. Factors influencing price are primarily based around the choice of electrode holder, where the decision is based on immersion depth and material of construction, to name a few.
An automatic measuring chain would consist of a TopCal S (CPC300), a retractable holder and a cable and electrode assembly. Optional functions include Ex certification, control of external valves, circuitry for glass or ISFET electrodes, active or passive current outputs, current outputs with or without HART protocol, Profibus PA or DP and an array of mechanical options.
Additional cost savings result from the fact that TopCal S can be programmed using Windows based software. Complete realtime configuration of hold, cleaning and calibration functions can be entered within minutes on multiple measuring points from a central control room.
"TopCal S enables numerous benefits - from reducing personnel exposure to hazardous or aggressive media to preventative maintenance, cost savings and guaranteed uptime and accuracy," says Fouche. "It is the kind of product that sells itself."
