So, you have produced your pièce-de-resistance, the mother of all automatic widgets with bells and whistles galore. Now what? Before it is introduced to the market place, someone has to create a clear set of instructions to ensure that customers know how to make effective use of the product.
This task is often laid in the hands of the products designer, since he knows exactly how it works. There are some disadvantages in taking this route. Firstly, development staff are there to design, and should ideally be working on the next product. Secondly, it is all too easy for an expert on its design to either assume too much on behalf of the user, or go into too much detail on how it works. How many times have you read a set of instructions where either certain steps have been omitted, or it tells you in great detail how the unit works but not how to use it to do what you want?
