Paperless recorder is the wave of the future

May 2000 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

With the introduction of its new Eco-Graph paperless recorder, Endress + Hauser believes that it has set a new trend in multivariable recorder design that combines flexibility with environmental compatibility at a price claimed to be 20% lower than conventional paper recorders.

The Eco-Graph is available in two versions - a 3 and 6-channel line recorder offering performance that extends from simple standard recording functions to the sophisticated functionality of hybrid recorders combined with analog channel integration. The overall operating costs are lower than conventional paper and pen recorders as there are fewer moving parts and no need for consumables such as paper and ink.

The unit's large 5" (127 mm) colour graphic display can be used to display plots across the entire screen or in split zones with one zone per channel to avoid overlapping. The unit also offers the option of displaying in either line format in high-resolution 1-pixel width or wider, or in large 5-character digital format. The display can be switched to show alarm setponts and events (eg power failures, alarm conditions, etc), event messages and additional channel information such as tag numbers, engineering units, etc.

Eco-Graph features three or six universal analog inputs with two alarm setpoints per channel, four control/event inputs and three relays as well as RS232 and RS485 outputs. A quick set-up function and automatic signal detection simplifies the configuration process. This automatic signal detection function not only reduces set-up time but also makes sensor replacement easier. The set-up process is menu-driven, activated via the front panel buttons and complemented by a built-in operating manual. The operator simply selects the measurement type and the engineering units required, then sets the decimal point and range. Channel parameters can be quickly copied to other channels and set-ups downloaded via diskette. Set-up can also be executed using the ReadWin PC software which is included with the Eco-Graph at no extra cost. The user can create set-up diskettes which can then be used to download the set-up information to the Eco-graph using the unit's internal diskette drive. ReadWin also provides access to stored data and data import functions.

The unit offers a fully adjustable feed rate from 5 mm/h to 1000 mm/h and stores the equivalent of up to 70 m of paper worth of data in its internal memory. In addition, a built-in diskette drive allows for data archiving, providing an additional 1,44 MB of storage on industry standard diskettes. The Eco-Graph monitors the amount of storage memory available and alerts the user when the memory or diskette approaches the 'full' level.

Endress + Hauser is offering the Eco-Graph on a 'Try before you buy' basis whereby customers can use the unit in their plants for four weeks on a test basis at no charge.
