Ushers Brewery of Trowbridge, UK, used the addition of a new mash conversion vessel as an opportunity to also implement a new control system; South African developed Adroit 4.1. Used extensively in the European food and beverage industries, Adroit is a flexible open scada HMI that includes several advanced features, such as on-line configuration, plant VCR, hot standby, scripting and database connectivity – all within the standard package. As the parent company of Ushers, Briggs of Burton sponsored the new vessel, process design and installation. A PC-based Adroit scada server running on Microsoft Windows NT-based in the brew house, provided an operator interface for the cost-effective new control system. While the scada communicates with a Mitsubishi A2 programmable logic controller (PLC), the PLC in turn is linked to field devices by Wargo distributed I/O using a Profibus network.
