Coriolis mass flowmeters gain popularity

May 2000 Flow Measurement & Control

Mass flow measurement based on the coriolis principle is very widespread in industry and the method is being adopted for a growing number of applications. The reason for this advance is that the mass flowmeter functions independently of changes in process conditions such as pressure, temperature, density, electrical conductivity and viscosity. This technology is ideal for applications where measuring accuracy and capability are of critical importance to the process.

Development on the new Massflo series 6000 mass flowmeter has been conducted in close co-operation with a number of key customers who all impose the same demands, such as improved step response, better noise immunity and greater modularity. The dramatic improvement in response time has been achieved by using the latest ASIC technology. In cooperation with leading suppliers of digital signal processors, Danfoss has developed a dedicated mass flow chip that takes care of the entire signal conditioning process.

The flowmeter is practically immune to external noise effects. A good meter is required to handle smaller signals and remain unaffected by noise superimposed on the actual measuring signal. Improved noise immunity results in a significant increase in flowmeter flexibility because it can be located at any point in the installation.

Being modular, equipment upgrades to match a new version of an existing bus – or another bus – are made far easier. Each individual module is retrofitted by the customer, making it possible to configure the meter to suit actual requirements.

The higher degree of integration in Massflo series 6000 has made it possible to reduce the size of the meter enclosure. It is now more compact, and thus more flexible as regards installation. This flexibility is reflected in a newly designed interface between sensor and signal converter. All communication between the two is through a standardised plug connection, which is identical for all types of sensors and signal converters.
