Some relief for pumps

August 2002 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

The model 480/490 is a spring-loaded liquid relief valve, certified to BS6759 Part 3 by SAFED/AOTC and is unlike any other valve in its range. The design features of this valve make it suitable for pressure relief and by-pass duties for positive displacement pumps.

The design of this particular relief valve ensures that the adjusting spring is completely isolated from the fluid during the discharge operation of the valve. The adjusting spring is housed in a cartridge type assembly, isolated by a spindle 'O' ring manufactured from Nitrile or Viton rubber, according to type.

The main benefits are that the spring is protected from the risk of corrosion and that the valve internals can be cleaned without disturbing the spring setting, alleviating the need to reset the valve. This is possible because the spring housing can be completely withdrawn from the valve body intact.

The spring cartridge assembly can be supplied separately for use as an integral pump bypass relief valve. All 480/490 relief valves are equipped with top guided valve discs that are precision lapped and the valves are available with either male or female threaded connections in BSP or NPT.

There are three valves in the 480/490 series of relief valves, the main difference being the materials of construction. The 480 is a bronze relief valve, the 485 is also bronze, but has a renewable stainless steel seat, while the 490 is manufactured totally out of stainless steel. The fact that the valves are manufactured from bronze and/or stainless steel makes the series suitable for a wide range of corrosive/noncorrosive fluids.

With certified flows of 10% overpressure, the 480/490 series of relief valves are a suitable choice for pump manufacturers and pump users.
