Before ISFET (ion-sensitive field effective transistor) was developed, pH testing meant fragile glass electrodes that broke easily and required wet storage. Several different electrodes were needed for handling a variety of sample types and clogged electrodes made it difficult or impossible to test viscous, dirty or semi solid samples. DeltaTRAK's new pH meter, supplied by Temperature Controls, combines a rugged, handheld meter with an advanced ISFET-based stainless steel probe.
This pH system offers ease of portability with a solid-state, handheld meter and unique nonglass probes that store dry and require no fill solutions or routine maintenance. The sturdy silicon ISFET microchip responds instantly when testing a sample. The ISFET sensor also makes the probes clog resistance, allowing users to test just about anything - clear liquids, dirty samples, bread dough and meat product samples.
The probe has two stainless steel shafts with bevelled rips for ease of penetration. One shaft contains the ISFET sensor and a thermistor for automatic temperature compensation (ATC) and the other the reference (potassium chloride; silver-silver chloride gel). To clean the probe after testing oily or exceptionally dirty samples, use a soft bristle toothbrush and scrub the prongs with soapy water, then simply rinse it off with deionised water. The probe operates on a 9 V battery, making it portable and easy to use in the field.
