Two-wire electromagnetic flowmeters

June 2002 Flow Measurement & Control

More than three years after it was first introduced, two-wire technology has matured to the point where it offers real benefits to end-users. Replacing the traditional four wires used to connect field instrumentation devices to each other and control rooms, Endress+Hauser now offers two-wire technology on its Promag series of electromagnetic flowmeters as a means of reducing capital cost, as well as energy consumption.

"When two-wire technology was first introduced, it was found to be incapable of providing the same functionality as four-wire technology," Endress+Hauser spokesperson, Grant Joyce, explains. "Although there are still applications - especially the larger, more complicated type - where one would rather use four-wire technology, two-wire is now very capable of bringing several benefits to the majority of applications. The most obvious of these would be a total cost-saving of up to R7000 per measuring point."

The key to incorporating two-wire technology into the Promag series of electromagnetic flowmeters was in developing electronics that consumed less energy, without sacrificing functionality, quality or durability.

As a result of its frugal energy consumption, the intrinsically safe Promag 23 P for chemical applications did not have to be made explosion-proof, which means that it is lighter, more affordable and compact. The sensors and transmitter of the Promag series can be 'mixed and matched' and equipped with various software packages to add value in the form of preventative maintenance, batching or customised applications. Endress+Hauser's Promag meters deliver measuring accuracy of 0,5%.
