Saving costs with a wireless control solution

Because wireless technologies can save on cost and provide a solution where wires are not possible, wireless Ethernet technologies are becoming more prevalent every day. To demonstrate the advantages of wireless Ethernet in industrial surroundings, Advanced Measurements built a scale model with NI LabVIEW Real-Time running on the FieldPoint 2000 Family and a wireless Ethernet spread spectrum radio to show users how to build a compact, reliable distributed measurement and control system with commercially available products.

This wireless, distributed measurement and control technology may be used in applications such as environmental, power, and machine monitoring and control.

The demonstration uses a to-scale model of a truck to illustrate an in-vehicle application that can benefit from a user-definable, realtime, wireless Ethernet system. An FP-2000 module is mounted on the truck and a wireless Ethernet spread spectrum radio is used to communicate with the module. The FP-2000 module contains an embedded LabVIEW application developed and downloaded to the module using LabVIEW RealTime. The technology demonstration provides two levels of control with the FieldPoint 2000 Family. With scada the user can monitor and control the embedded application from LabVIEW at a remote point, using a PC. The FP-2000 module can also control the technology demonstration in the vehicle autonomously with the embedded LabVIEW application. With no user interaction from the PC, the embedded FP-2000 application can use onboard sensors to fully control speed, steering, and accessories on the truck.

The FieldPoint 2000 Family was chosen for the technology demonstration because it provides a compact, strong, industrial product for distributed measurement and control applications. The LabVIEW application runs on the FieldPoint controller module, so the intelligent FieldPoint can provide much faster control loops. If the wireless link disappears between the spread-spectrum radio and the FP-2000 module, the application continues running on the dedicated controller on the module. The FieldPoint 2000 family gives users a reliable, low-power solution for distributed measurement and control applications.
