Ultrasonic level detection for closed/open loop operation

May 2002 Level Measurement & Control

The MultiRanger ultrasonic level transmitters from Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) are designed for short- and medium-range applications up to 15 m (50 ft). The multifunctional devices may be used to detect the level of fuel oil, waste materials, acids, wood chips or for high dumping piles in the water/waste water, mining, nonmetallic minerals, cement, chemicals, pulp and paper, and food and beverage industries. In addition to their comprehensive measuring and analysis functions, the new units also include integrated control functions, permitting them to be used for applications such as pump control.

The units are available in two versions. The MultiRanger 100 monitors filling levels and offers basic pump control and alarm functionality. The MultiRanger 200 provides additional flow and volume calculations as well as enhanced functions for alarms and pump control. With a number of ordering options, users can customise the units for their specific measuring tasks, for example the number of relays, single- or dual-channel operation and software features.

The MultiRanger units permit the connection of floats, limit level switches or other devices that come into contact with the product - eg for the continuous monitoring of levels or for the prevention of overfilling. The SmartLinx communications modules are used to interface the MultiRanger units to common fieldbus systems such as Profibus, Allen-Bradley RIO, and DeviceNet. The units already feature integrated Modbus-RTU and RS485 interfaces. An external modem can be used to retrieve application data via remote data transfer.

The Sonic Intelligence Software that is integrated in the transmitters provides predefined functions for the processing of echo profiles and filters as well as six TVT (time varying threshold) characteristics and 10 echo processing algorithms. The user is provided with additional assistance for the selection of parameters: During the configuration process, the software automatically determines the algorithm that is suited best for the application.

The MultiRanger units can easily be set up with a handheld programming unit and the Dolphin Plus configuration software, for programming the diagnostics and display of echo profiles. The back-lit LCD is easy to read.

Compatibility with existing models means that existing cables can easily be connected to the new unit while retaining the existing cable glands and connections.
