Flowmeters producing world-famous beer

May 2002 Flow Measurement & Control

The Royal Grolsch NV Brewery in Holland is using a range of Krohne flowmeters employing magnetic, ultrasonic and mass flow technology to produce its world-famous beer. Royal Grolsch's rich tradition dates back to 1615, with its origin in the East of The Netherlands, has grown from a local brewery to a national institution.

Grolsch is now a world-famous brand and its distinctive-tasting beer, is perhaps best recognised by its familiar swingtop bottle. The Grolsch brewery in Enschede has been using Krohne's flowmeters for many years to monitor and regulate a wide range of processes. Magnetic flowmeters are utilised in various production areas involving wort, beer, process water, wastewater and CIP (Clean-in-place) liquids. Other Krohne flowmeters at Grolsch include the Variflux (100% stainless steel) and the ceramic magmeters, which are employed to fill the beer casks due to their repeatability and accuracy.

Krohne's electromagnetic flowmeters are used extensively in the food industry to provide continuous noncontact flow measurement within tight tolerances. The noncontact nature of these devices means that there is no pressure drop, and the free-flowing system facilitates easy cleaning for hygienic environments. Variflux inductive flowmeters have been developed for volumetric dosing of conductive liquids and are a favourite choice where accurate measurement is necessary for quality control. These flowmeters are also available with a wide choice of hygienic connections.

Krohne ultrasonic flowmeters have been chosen by the Royal Grolsch brewery to perform on the de-mineralised water process, and the company's VA (variable area) meters are employed on process water. Yeast and glucose is measured with Krohne mass flow meters.

Krohne has for many years led the development of mass flowmeter technology, which is widely used in the brewing and food industries for supplying accurate data for consistent dosing. With over two million units installed worldwide, the H250 flowmeter from Krohne is now accepted as the industry standard for VA flowmeters.
