SABS Design Institute awards to dovetail with world summit

May 2002 News

Winning entries from the SABS Design Institute Awards 2002 will participate under the banner of SA Design and Technology at SACOB's Business Week, which will dovetail with the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September this year.

According to Adrienne Viljoen, manager of the SABS Design Institute, this is particularly significant as good engineering and industrial design forms the backbone of any developing country's economy and participation will allow local designers to showcase excellent examples of innovation.

"The SABS Design Institute has had an ongoing impact on the quality of industrial and engineering design in South Africa, and we believe that through our annual awards programme we have fostered a culture of innovation and creativity," she says.

"The need to encourage both industrial and engineering design is particularly important in developing nations such as South Africa, and the purpose of the SABS Design Institute Award is to provide an initiative that will allow this and to improve local product design while giving recognition to South African industrial and engineering designers," she says.

Entries for the SABS Design Institute 2002 are being submitted in two distinct categories, industrial design and engineering design. The former is for products intended for domestic, working and recreational environments, while the latter is for products used in general industry, mining, agriculture, medicine, transportation and communication.

Viljoen explains that products entered must have been designed in South Africa, and while not necessarily locally manufactured must have an established marketing track record either locally or abroad, or both.

Adjudication of the entries will be done by a panel of experts from various fields and will take place over a two-day period at the SABS Design Institute in Pretoria. Designers or design teams and the companies which own award winning products in the various categories will receive a certificate which will be awarded at a gala function to be held during the World Summit.

The closing date for entries to be submitted to the SABS Design Institute is 3 May 2002.
