Schneider Electric announces it has joined the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). "This participation is an important step in the implementation of our strategy to use the web, in our two businesses electrical distribution and industrial control and automation. As it will speed up the definition of the standards needed to generalise new services and application of web automation," notes Claude Ricaud, Vice-President Research and Development of Schneider Electric.
For Jean-François Abramatic President of W3C, "Web will rapidly extend its presence in industrial areas. The joining of a major player as Schneider Electric will help speed up this evolution."
Schneider Electric is an international power and control specialist, located in 130 countries with more that 9000 sales outlets. The company has four international brands, Merlin Gerin, Modicon, Square - and Telemecanique.
The World Wide Web Consortium was created to lead to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability. It is an international industry consortium jointly run by the MIT, Laboratory for Computer Science (MIT LCS) in the USA, the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA) in France and Keio University in Japan. To date, private groups, international laboratories and computer enterprises are members of the Consortium like Alcatel, American Express, American Online, Apple, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola.
The aim of the World Wide Web Consortium is to develop the applications of the web in the world of industry through a variety of initiatives: implementation of referenced softwares for the installation, promotion and definition of standards, development of new prototype protocols and production of applications.
