I/O modules with industrial Ethernet
March 2002
Data Acquisition & Telemetry
A new range of MOD-MUX I/O products from Procon Electronics now incorporates the industry standard Modbus TCP protocol for Ethernet networks.
The new product range consists of digital, analog, thermocouple and RTD I/O modules, which plug directly into an Ethernet hub using a standard RJ45 connector. These modules are well suited for remote I/O and data acquisition applications were data can be made accessible throughout a building on an existing Ethernet network. Connecting the network to the Internet enables this data to be accessed from any remote site in the world.
Each MOD-MUX I/O module has a built in Modbus server and web server. The Modbus server is used to make data available to a master PLC or PC using the Modbus TCP protocol. The I/O modules have been tested with most of the well-known scada packages available using the built in Modbus TCP drivers. Up to 4 PLCs or PCs can access the same I/O module simultaneously.
The web server enables all process variables to be viewed from a PC running a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, from anywhere on the network. This feature is useful for diagnostic purposes and can be performed simultaneously with the Modbus communications without interfering with the module operation. A demonstration thermocouple module has been placed on the Internet in the United Kingdom and can be accessed from any PC on the Internet. Anybody wishing to experience for themselves the simplicity of accessing remote data may do so by opening their Internet browser and going to either of these URLs: http://62.49.124.45/</a> or http://modmux.specview.com
The product range also includes an Ethernet to serial converter. The converter enables devices with an Ethernet connection such as PCs or PLCs to communicate with standard Modbus devices on a RS232 or RS485 serial link.
