Logotel appointed distributor of intrinsically safe GSM devices

March 2002 News

Logotel Media has been appointed exclusive global distributor for Repro Supplies to market and sell a range of intrinsically safe (IS) GSM devices. These devices include GSM mobile phones; GSM modems and GSM least-cost routers.

David Dugmore, director of Logotel Media says: "An IS device is a device which can be used in a hazardous location without causing an explosion. Power generated by the transceiver in the handset and by the battery can ignite hazardous material such as liquid gas, chemicals or vaporous material, fibres and dust." The IS devices are modified in such a way as to ensure that lower energy levels are emitted and sparking contained in a sealed unit - thereby eliminating any chance of an explosion. Battery, transceiver and circuitry modifications are also conducted on the units.

Logotel Media currently has 12 products available - The Nokia 6250 Exib, Nokia 6250 Exia and the Ericsson R310 Exib mobile phones are currently being used in hazardous areas such as petrochemical sites, oil refineries, gas manufacturing plants and mining environments across South Africa. "GSM is now enabled on these hazardous locations, where previously any cellphone was strictly forbidden," says Dugmore. A range of IS GSM modems are also available - the primary uses being for monitoring levels of explosive substances and enabling data telemetry such as SMS in or near explosive environments.

Gavin O'Connor, developer at Repro Supplies, says, "There is a huge requirement for these products - petrochemical sites, sugar plantations, chemical manufacturers and suppliers and textile industries all have hazardous locations and all need GSM to communicate and become more productive." He says the company, together with Logotel Media is also looking at taking GSM underground using IS devices.

Logotel Media is currently looking at signing partnerships with overseas companies. "We are pushing to expand the products into markets and develop a name for South African businesses - the expertise in this country needs to be marketed overseas and we are confident that these products are going to do this", says Dugmore.
