Remote control via GSM

With the rapid growth of mobile telephony and the expansion of networks offering widespread coverage through both land-based repeaters and satellites, the possibility of worldwide coverage for remote monitoring and control applications is becoming more and more feasible.

Electrowave, a South African company with its head office situated in Durban, has developed a remote monitoring and control module that makes use of the GSM network to provide a remote monitoring and control capability in areas covered by GSM networks.

Areas of application for this product include remote monitoring and/or control of a myriad of applications, ranging from dam or reservoir levels through electronic billboard displays to burglar alarm systems.

Advantages of using GSM for remote monitoring and control applications as opposed to other forms of radio telemetry are as follows:

* No radio telemetry infrastructure establishment costs and maintenance costs.

* Low operating costs, since use is made of the GSM Short Message Service facility only.

* High network reliability.

* Virtually global coverage.

* Low power consumption making battery power with solar and or wind backup possible.

* Small in size and simple to install.

* A user's cellphone can becomes their remote control unit.
