Sasol equips entire plant with over 500 instruments
February 2002
News
An entire ethylene oxide plant operated by Sasol Germany has been equipped with over 500 Endress + Hauser instruments.
Future market requirements and the need for more cost effective operation triggered the expansion project at the German facility. The project posed a special challenge, as it involved upgrading the plant by installing a new process control system. Further complicating matters, the measurement and control instrumentation of the original facility contained numerous redundant pressure transmitters for process pressure parameters, level and flow (differential pressure). The employment of new measuring methods at these points for facility modernising purposes would have entailed opening some of the pipes and would not have been possible during operation and under Ex-conditions.
Therefore, it was decided to equip existing process connections with state-of-the-art pressure instruments, which did not require any interruption of the operation. The concept of the Cerabar S and Deltabar S instrument families, with their mutually exchangeable modules, their long-term stability and simple operation convinced the responsible engineers when they selected the products.
More than 500 Endress + Hauser instruments are now contributing to the increased availability of the facility. The new measurement instrumentation is completely compatible with the newly installed Delta control system. Signal transmission will retain 4 to 20 mA technology (HART), which provides the advantage of configuring all transmitters using Asset Management Solutions software via the control system. The adaptation to a 'chemical-industry-proven' bus technology at a later date is already possible today in Cerabar S and Deltabar S pressure transmitters.
