Local scada chosen to monitor broadcast backbone

September 2000 SCADA/HMI

Sole South African terrestrial broadcasting services provider Sentech has acquired a 5000-scan point Adroit scada (supervisory control and data acquisition) system to monitor crucial variables on its ground stations. With five remote user interfaces, the South African-developed scada-software will enable Sentech to monitor airconditioning, power supply, back-up systems, transmission status and signal strength.

Following this first stage of automation enhancements to the service provider's technical backbone, it is envisaged that further enhancements will see Adroit used as a link between the 15 Sentech maintenance centres dispersed throughout Southern Africa. As Sentech provides its services to several broadcasters, ranging from E-TV and the SABC through to CNN and the BBC, technical requirements are varied, advanced and ever changing. For these reasons, as well as increased competition from satellite service providers, the company will be increasing its levels of advanced automation in order to enable remote monitoring and even control of programming material and regional or station-specific variables. New technologies are also being tested to ensure that Sentech stays ahead of market requirements.

"We chose Adroit from the spectrum of monitoring and control packages tested for several reasons," Sentech network support system specialist Willie Schonfeldt explains. "The fact that it is a local product meant that we could use the extensive in-house skills and experience of Adroit for functions like driver development, something that would not have been possible or affordable with the international alternatives on the market."
