The Internet of Things (IoT) is the internetworking of physical devices (connected devices and smart devices), buildings, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to collect and exchange data. The Industrial IoT (IIoT) is the application of the IoT to manufacturing and the control and automation industry, which incorporates machine learning and Big Data technology, harnessing sensor data, Machine-2-Machine (M2M) communication and other technologies that have existed in industrial settings for years.
IoT ONE is an information platform dedicated to accelerating the adoption of the IIoT by providing visibility into ecosystems, vendors, technologies and use cases. The IIoT is important because it focuses on intelligent smart systems comprised of machines that are connected to computers that interpret, analyse and make decisions almost instantly, based on sensor data from many widely distributed sources.
After assessing over 1600 IIoT companies, IoT ONE identified 100 as having the greatest impact in the following areas: brand influence in markets, technology innovation, and ecosystem openness. South Africa had seven companies in the assessment and Adroit Technologies was ranked 68th in the index.
The top countries represented on the index were the United States, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The vendor headquarters featured on this IoT ONE platform have a 63% presence in these five countries. The full list can be found at https://tinyurl.com/yb3mnpnk. Rankings are inherently subjective.
