Flow Measurement & Control

World-first in flow measurement

November 2001 Flow Measurement & Control

Interkama saw the introduction of what Krohne believes is a world-first - its new generation three-beam ultrasonic flowmeters for process and control measurements in the petrochemical and chemical industries.

The introduction of a third measuring beam, together with intelligent digital signal processing, has resulted in improved accuracy (0,3%) and excellent repeatability. The inherent advantages of the 3-beam system create the strongest 'whole life costs' case for a move to the multibeam technology. The third beam permits detection of, and compensation for, laminar or turbulent flow. It delivers very high accuracy with negligible pressure loss because there is no intrusion into the flow. The three-beam ultrasonic flowmeter system has been designed to deliver the benefits of highly accurate and maintenance-free flow measurement to industries that have in the past been forced to primarily rely on turbine and PD meters or orifice plates. The three-beam system has no moving parts to wear, thus eliminating a major maintenance requirement. It does not require costly periodic re-calibrations or filters, and its exceptional performance offers bi-directional flow measurement, a high dynamic range and wide metering range together with multiple parameter output. Its construction and ultrasonic operation also means that there is no pressure drop.

Recognising the specific needs and demands of the petrochemical and chemical industries, Krohne has created two dedicated systems. UFM 3030 has been specifically designed for the chemical industry. Its batching function means that one of the outputs can be assigned to control a valve when the programmed batch is reached. ALTOSONIC III is designed for the petrochemical industry and has a special feature that enables the software to accept process temperature and pressure input to calculate corrected volumes based on API 2540 standards.
