Schneider Electric recently held a two-day event at its Midrand campus to showcase its expertise in installed based services. Over 130 customers, representing industries such as water and wastewater; food and beverage; electrical utilities; mining, minerals and metals; and facility management, attended the informative sessions by local and international Schneider Electric experts.

Keynote speaker, Bongani Twala, vice president for the services business unit at Schneider Electric South Africa, pointed out that when it comes to electrical distribution and industrial automation infrastructure, the answer is straightforward: “Get professional expertise. Doing business in today’s economic environment is challenging enough. For peace of mind, it is advisable to outsource the management of an electrical installation.”
The event highlighted that installed base services should be developed to assist companies to increase productivity, reliability and safety; mitigating risk and limit downtime; keeping equipment up to date and extending its lifespan; cutting costs and increasing savings; and improving return on investment.
“To achieve the above objectives, Schneider Electric has divided its installed base services into seven service modules, namely:
• Remote technical assistance
• On-site expert assistance.
• Software update and support.
• Preventive and predictive maintenance.
• Extended warranties.
• Spare parts management.
• Exchange and repairs.
Discussions focused on Schneider Electric’s installation and commissioning services, which have been created specifically to improve the launch phase of electrical installations. “With the modernisation solutions from Schneider Electric, you get a cost-effective means of updating your installed base. Whether it requires retrofit, retrofill, or replacement of ageing equipment, we can help you save time and money,” explained Twala.
Sibusiso Bakana and Johann Pienaar, delegates at the event, each won a free Schneider Electric installed base audit for their respective employers, City Power and Iritron. The audit will assess the performance of these companies’ electrical installations and Schneider Electric will propose improvements to meet their business energy needs.
The audit methodology is based on four steps, producing four detailed plans per customer. These include a maintenance plan, modernisation plan, monitoring plan, and a management plan – resulting in a clear action plan for the customer.
Since 2005, when services audits were first introduced by Schneider Electric, more than 400 customers from industries as diverse as buildings, electric utilities, healthcare, mining, and oil and gas, have undergone assessments.
