New wire-actuated encoder with digital display

June 2015 Sensors & Transducers

Siko has announced the introduction of its new battery powered, wire-actuated encoder SDE04. The objective was to combine existing technology and convert it into a wire-draw mechanism, providing a simple solution to linear measurement, with a digital display. The SDE04 finds application in sheet metal works (limit stop adjustment), labeling machines (height adjustment) and wood working machines.

In many applications, only a wire-actuated encoder can be used as a linear measuring sensor, as the design often does not allow for guided sensor systems for measurement. The easy assembly and guiding of the wire pull-out means that the measuring system can be easily integrated into existing systems. Different interfaces and output signals make it possible to connect to a vast range of different control concepts.

Due to the possibility of attaching various rotary encoders, the wire-actuated types offer a wide range of possibilities for use, regardless of the type of output signal required. Outdoor use is already standard for the wire-actuated position encoders, which meet the necessary prerequisites: working temperature range from -40 to 80°C and a robust casing that can include outlets to drain any fluid that accumulates in the device.

How they work could not be simpler: a measuring wire is wound onto an internal drum in one layer, guaranteeing very high linearity across the entire measurement range. When the wire is pulled out, the drum rotates. The angle sensor connected to the drum axis registers this rotation and produces a measurement signal that is proportional to the wire movement. The wire is returned using a spiral spring on the rotational axis of the drum. Because the wire is simply attached to the measurement object, the assembly effort is especially low. As a result, there is no need for any additional guiding systems or for the installation of energy chains. The flexible wire also allows for linear position measurements in inaccessible locations. Indirect measurement paths can also be realised with the help of return pulleys.
