The First Tech Challenge, which grew out of the First Lego League, is in its second year of competition in South Africa.
This year 23 teams from communities around Gauteng competed against each other to build the best robots. The Thuto Lefa Secondary school was invited by the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre manager to take part and they found a willing and supportive sponsor in Vega Instruments SA. Team VEGAnucs was born.
The school’s team, made up of five students between the ages of 15 and 18, is led by a mentor and two team coaches. Staff members at Vega Instruments played a supporting role by offering technical and practical advice and encouragement.
The final competition was held during August at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and team VEGAnucs reached the top five, only being eliminated in the semi-finals. However, they didn’t come away empty handed as they were awarded the Best Motivational and Inspirational trophy.
“By supporting the team from the Thuto Lefa Secondary School, Vega Instruments’ philosophy of giving back to the community was fulfilled once more,” said MD John Groom. “We were excited to play a part in helping young learners to explore the world of science and technology and to help develop our future young professionals.”
