Woodhead Connectivity has introduced the ENHSD, an active switch, which unlike a repeater hub, will intelligently route Ethernet messages only out of the appropriate port. It is also a store and forward device enabling multiple stations to communicate with the switch simultaneously. In factory automation environments, this function is essential for transmission of time-critical information.
A choice of either 10/100 MHz auto-negotiation enables devices that transmit at different speeds to reside on the same subnet. Its dedicated uplink port allows linking to another switch without the use of a crossover cable. The ENHSD is suitable for use in temperatures up to 85°C and has full duplex capability with 1,4 GHz of total bandwidth.
The ENHSD is designed to mount on a DIN rail and is able to survive the temperature and vibration extremes that may be found within a standard industrial enclosure. No programming is required and the switch can be powered with only 10 to 30 V d.c. which already exists in most cabinets.
Ethernet-enabled field devices that reside outside the cabinet can be interfaced to the ENHSD via a RJ-Lnxx bulkhead receptacle. This provides a sealed IP67 connection on the outside of the enclosure and a standard jack on the inside, which can be connected with a commercial grade patch cord. The use of Ethernet in manufacturing operations offers numerous advantages including enhanced information flow, ease of maintainability and simplified access to the Internet for use in remote monitoring and diagnostics.
The ENHSD is well suited for use in the automotive, material handling, food and beverage, semiconductor, packaging and pulp and paper industries. It is also good for any industry that wants to take advantage of the high data throughput and simplified integration offered by an Internet network.
