Continuous ultrasonic level measurement

Level Measurement & Control
In the food industry the continuous level measurement of difficult substances can present problems. Hawk Measurement Systems, which is represented in SA by Protea Automation Solutions, markets an extensive range of ultrasonic level measuring devices specifically designed to continuously monitor levels in sumps, storage vessels and pneumatically-fed silos for a whole range of food products - liquidised products such as corn syrup, chocolate, fructose, soybean oil, as well as solids comprising corn, wheat, sugar, fish meal, soybeans and flour.
The Hawk equipment is completely modular, with single or dual transducer versions, and a choice of four operating options - 5, 10, 20 and 30 kHz - which are selected for optimisation of the application. The dual input amplifiers permit two silos to be monitored from one amplifier. Up to six setpoint relays can be included in the system. The analog outputs can be inverted, are galvanically and optionally isolated, and may be programmed anywhere between the emitters maximum range of 15 m and the blanking distance, which can be as close as 300 mm at 30 kHz.
The amplifier is in an impact-resistant polyester case with hinged transparent front cover, protected to IP67, and has alphanumeric 16-character dot matrix displays for easy programming and monitoring, and access codes prevent unauthorised programme changes. The transducers are protected to IP68. Manufactured in Australia, the range meets 3-A sanity specifications.
The Hawk range is also used extensively in other industries such as pulp and paper, mining, and chemicals. (The picture shows some of the Hawk ultrasonic level measuring devices for the food industry)
