ABB has secured an order valued approximately R10m from Durban Electricity for the supply of compact SFG medium voltage (MV) switchgear over the next two years. Compact switchgear is increasingly seen as an alternative to the conventional type as it is safer and requires virtually no maintenance.
The company said it secured the order because of its superior technology and the customer's confidence in the company and its products. The Durban utility is known as one of the leading utilities in South Africa when it comes to exploring new technologies. ABB anticipates that other utilities will soon follow suit.
ABB in Southern Africa employs 3500 people and has operations in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The group has several empowerment companies in the areas of high voltage switchgear, distribution transformers and electrical enclosures manufacture.
