Temperature Measurement
Due to the vast range of thermal imaging applications in industry, it is essential to take into consideration the various features of thermal imaging equipment available. Some applications only require basic features, while others require highly sophisticated functionality.
According to testo, the key is to select a device that meets current needs as well as providing room to grow to future requirements. Comfort, battery life, lens selection and thermal sensitivity should all be considered.
Sensitivity: NETD 80 mK or less will allow the detection of thermal variances associated with anomalies.
Resolution: a personal choice in imagers. The lower the resolution the more ‘blobs’ will be seen. Blobs are areas of thermal change but cannot be discerned because of low resolution. A resolution of 160 x 120 should be considered a minimum. The higher the resolution the better the image quality will be.
Lens: in many applications the user will not be close to the section being inspected. This will require a fairly wide angle lens as standard equipment. A 32° lens is standard on most testo imagers and works well. Telephoto lenses will be needed on occasion when working over long distances.
Ease of use: Large view screen eases eye strain and one hand operation and long life batteries can simplify use.
High operating temperature range: this is important because overheating is a common problem. Several testo imagers have extended thermal range options, the 882 series up to 550°C while the 885 and 890 series can provide effective accurate readings up to 1200°C.
