As part of its apprenticeship programme, Vega Instruments SA has again offered a year’s workplace experience to students from the University of Johannesburg. This year sees two talented young women, Trust Sibiya and Remind Sambo, joining the company for the experiential practical phase of their three year electrical engineering and instrumentation course.

The students have not only been working in the service department learning how to repair and calibrate instruments, but have also accompanied technicians to various client sites to learn the practical applications of instruments in the field. Their travels have taken them around the country to coal and platinum mines, breweries and maize silos.

Growing up in Mpumalanga, Sibiya matriculated from one of the top schools in the region specialising in maths and science. “I see myself eventually becoming a global player within the instrumentation industry,” she says. “I believe that there is huge scope internationally for a career in my chosen field.”

Sambo matriculated from Malamulele High School in Limpopo. “My mother inspired me to follow my studies in process instrumentation,” she explains. “I believe there is no limit to what I can do if I put my mind to it.”

The chance for hands-on experience that Vega has offered has ignited their passion for process instrumentation and turned out to be far more rewarding than they ever imagined.
