ABB Measurement Products recently launched the VM3D volumetric laser scanner for automated stockpile inventory management with a live demonstration to industry. ABB has acquired a wide range of technologies for level measurement and the VM3D, which was conceived, designed and developed in South Africa, is part of this portfolio. Manufactured in Canada, the unique VM3CD laser scanner measures levels in stockpiles, large silos, bunkers, domes and sheds. Data is transmitted over a 3G network to an ABB data centre with the results, including visualisation of the stockpile, being made available on a dedicated ABB website. This makes inventory management an easy and affordable process. Applications include gold and metal ores, sugar, fertilisers, coal, maize and plastic pellets.
