Leuze sensors for industrial packaging applications

BUQ, Germany’s leading producer of mineral water, uses Schaefer pallet transport systems at its filling facilities for ease of handling, Leuze electronic sensor systems are used throughout for detection, measuring, positioning and safety at tasks.

“Schaefer has trusted the reliability of Leuze sensing products for many years,” Gerry Bryant, managing director of Countapulse Controls, says. “A particular advantage for BUQ’s installation in Berlin is that everything needed was available in the Leuze electronic product range, from scanners in metal and plastic housings to light barriers and complete systems, as well as sensors with special functions, such as sensitivity adjustment and quick alignment.

“The Leuze sensors’ high functional reliability for depolarising media was an additional benefit. Transparent PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, clear liquids and transparent foils are part of BUQ’s everyday operations and Leuze sensors fulfil these requirements effortlessly.“

In terms of safety in the workplace, the new MLD complete systems in the Leuze MLD 500 series have multiple light beam safety devices that allow access guarding systems with muting to be built in the shortest possible time. An MLD complete system incorporates a safety sensor with a muting indicator in addition to device columns, deflecting mirrors, muting mounting systems, muting light beam devices, reflectors, terminal boxes, cabling accessories and the MSI-RM2 safety relay – all in one set, pre-mounted in accordance with requirements. An industry-standard M12 plug and pre-configuration makes it possible to install the components almost entirely on a plug and play basis. This meets demands for short start-up times, simplifies mounting and reduces costs.

The Schaefer conveyor systems come into play after the containers of mineral water have been wrapped in foil and a handle applicator has applied carrying straps to the containers.

All scanners and reflection light beam devices in the conveyor line ensure that the signals necessary for a smooth material flow are reliably created. State oriented, Profibus based control technology guarantees optimal operation, such as impact free transport and gentle buffering, with the highest possible product and transport stability. In addition, the layer formation process is dynamic, yet precise.

Michael Koch, head of construction at Schaefer: “We achieve high performance with our systems in a small space, meaning we provide high performance density at good energy efficiency. A few years ago, two machines were needed to manage this performance requirement, but today this is accomplished with just one machine, freeing up valuable floor space for customers.

“The equipment comprising the Baruth system, including the Leuze electronic sensors guarantees high system availability, representing an ideal combination of robust machine construction from Schaefer and leading sensor technology from Leuze to create an optimum technical solution.“
