Belden announces the RSP-Smart

March 2013 IT in Manufacturing

Belden has added the RSP-Smart, an inexpensive variant of the tried and tested family of RSP switches in its Hirschmann product range. Like the other devices in the family, this managed switch is able to withstand electrostatic discharges, magnetic fields and strong vibrations. It offers six Fast Ethernet Ports instead of 11, and these are available for twisted pair cable (100 BASE-TX) or equipped with two/four SFP transceivers (100 BASE-FX). All ports support precise time synchronisation compliant with IEEE 1588v2. Security mechanisms such as role-based access provide strong protection against network attacks. MRP (Media Redundancy Protocol) and RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree) redundancy methods ensure high network availability. A switch version is also available which provides support for the PRP (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) and HSR (High-Availability Seamless Redundancy) redundancy methods, ensuring zero ‘switchover time’ and high system productivity. Due to its rugged construction, the RSP-Smart can also be used in challenging environments like those found in machine construction for example. The switch is also certified for applications in the electricity industry, transport or hazardous environments.

Mounted on DIN rails, the switch is compliant with the IP30 protection standard and has a stainless steel housing measuring 90 (98) x 164 x 120 mm (EEC) (width x height x depth). Its temperature range is from -40°C to +70°C. The power supply voltage may be either 24/36/48 VDC or 110/250 VDC and 110/230 VAC.

The RSP-Smart can be quickly activated by plug-and-play. Configuration and diagnostics can be carried out with HiDiscovery, IHV or via a web interface. An SD card can be used to store the configuration data and retrieve it whenever necessary, and also to upgrade or downgrade the operating software.

The switch status can be monitored locally using indicator contacts. Detailed information can be displayed via a standard web browser. The integrated SNMP interface offers an additional centralised management function that allows the deployment of network management software such as Industrial HiVision.

With the new RSP-Smart from its Hirschmann product program, Belden has developed a costeffective industrial Ethernet switch without compromising on performance. As product manager, Jürgen Schmid, says: “This switch guarantees uninterrupted data communication even when faults occur, ensuring permanent access to applications. Power supply companies, for example, can continue providing electricity despite a lightning strike and tunnel operators can be certain that smoke extraction systems will be activated in the event of fire.”
