Siemens has produced the world’s longest rotor blades at a length of 75 metres each. Transporting these Titans is an impressive logistical feat. In early August, the world’s biggest fibreglass components were transported over a distance of 320 kilometres across Denmark, where the blades will be installed in the first prototype of a 6-megawatt wind turbine.
A crucial factor affecting the energy yield of a wind turbine, besides air density and wind speed, is the rotor swept area over which the wind flows. The Siemens rotor consisting of three 75-metre rotor blades has a diameter of 154 metres and covers a surface area of approximately 18 600 square metres, equal to about two and a half football fields.
