Aseptic solutions from SEW-Eurodrive

Garon Foods has been operating in Cape Town for over 21 years as a seafood delicatessen supplying a range of products to one of South Africa’s leading supermarket chains. It currently supplies frozen lines, deli seafood, party foods, primal or raw fish, long life products as well as several other seafood varieties.

Clean in place application

Cleanliness and hygienic operating conditions are of prime importance to the supermarket chains as well as to the high standards set by Garon Foods. Keeping the working area and the materials handling systems clean and free of unwanted grime and germs requires that the area be washed down three times per working day.

The liquid used for wash-down consists of highly aggressive chemicals, which do not distinguish between machinery parts and grime. As a result of exposure to these, motors in certain areas, like the chillers and pickled fish conveyors, were prone to corrosion.

Ruan Brits, one of the food technologist’s for Garon foods and responsible for the smooth operation of the plant, called in SEW-Eurodrive to provide a solution. Jason Jackson, the sales engineer responsible, was able to provide a tailor made solution from SEW-Eurodrive, the DAS Aseptic motor.

This motor has a protection rating of IP69K and smooth cooling fins to prevent bacteria getting lodged. There is also no fan that could swirl germs and dust. The Aseptic drive package has extensive resistance to chemicals, cleaning agents and disinfectants as well as high pressure purification with water.

As the conveyor in the dispatch area conveys the items from the ‘high risk’ area to the dispatch area via a metal detector, the speeds need to be varied according to the size and type of product being moved. SEW-Eurodrive was able to provide an off the shelf solution in the Movitrac MC LTEB IP66 drive. This drive is mounted directly on the wall and because of its high IP rating it is impervious to the water and cleaning chemicals that are sprayed or splashed onto it.

The DAS series provides protection in hygienic production areas and offers resistance against chemicals, cleaning agents and disinfectants as well as the cleaning water.

The motors can be mounted directly on helical, parallel shaft helical, helical-bevel, helical-worm or Spiroplan gear units. Due to their smooth surface, these motors are easy to clean. There is no build-up of dirt with this design, which helps prevent the formation of bacteria.
