FLIR T620/T640 thermal imagers prevent production losses

The making of newsprint, in addition to the main raw materials of wastepaper and wood, also requires a substantial amount of water. During the production process, the moisture content is reduced by drying and pressing from 1% consistency in the head box to a moisture content of 8% on the rewinder with many parameters affecting the drying process. An up-to-date moisture profile thus tells a lot about the quality of the drying – and hence about the quality of the end product. The FLIR T620/T640 infrared camera gives a good picture of the moisture distribution in the paper web as it travels past at a speed of around 1600 metres per minute.

“A world opens up to you when you look at this and various other installations within a paper factory with our FLIR T620/T640 infrared camera. You see things that remain hidden to the human eye,” says H. Rohloff CEO, Rainer Rohloff. “Using the FLIR T620/T640 with a thermal sensitivity of up to 40 mK combined with the crisp thermal image delivered by the 640 x 480 pixel resolution, any inconsistencies can be easily detected in a paper manufacturing plant.”

The flexibility and ergonomics of the FLIR T-series thermography camera makes it very practical and easy to use. This state-of-the-art, thermal imager comes with the latest touch screen technology, built in Bluetooth for quick voice annotating and WiFi for wireless connection to supported devices.

In addition to using the infrared camera to profile the moisture content during paper production, it helps other departments keep the paper plant running optimally: the camera is equally valuable when it comes to monitoring factory electrical installations. Thermographic measurements track uneven loads on e.g. motors and other (electro-) mechanical components, pinpointing problems that can be repaired before they get worse.

Parenco, a newsprint manufacturer in the Netherlands, successfully employs the FLIR T620/T640 infrared camera for safe, non-contact moisture profiling and monitoring of its paper production, as well as the predictive and preventative maintenance of various plant and ancillary equipment.
