Inclination and acceleration sensors

April 2012 Sensors & Transducers

Whether the task is to monitor the inclination angle of a machine component or the acceleration values of system structures or components, Pepperl+Fuchs offers a solution for both needs.

Inclination

A measurement suitable for movement sequences that are not subject to erratic movement: the measurement for the inclination is used to permanently monitor the machine in order to identify when readjustment is necessary. Inclination sensors provide angle feedback for motion control or detect critical tilt position limits. Applications include real-time inclination monitoring in a dip-coating system for car bodies, or tilt-angle monitoring on mobile equipment.

Acceleration

Fast movement that needs to be monitored in order to identify short-term dynamic influences on the machine: in order to prevent a dangerous situation when a lifting platform is extended, for example a sudden gust of high wind. It permits early detection and adjustment before an allowable inclination angle is exceeded. Acceleration sensors are used in wind power plants to monitor machine vibration. This feedback allows the system to predict possible machine component wear or unsafe structural load conditions.

Numerous measurement devices are available in the marketplace that will monitor inclination angles; however, the measurement information is often not supplied in line with the needs of the industry. Inclination sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs meet the needs of industry with a simple and easy angle measurement solution that is ideal for automation and commercial vehicle applications, or for use in renewable energy applications such as wind energy and solar plants.

The new generation of F99 inclination sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are easily configured to provide incline or tilt angles between 0 and 360° on a standardized 4-20 mA or 0-5 V analogue interface. Switch outputs are also provided in order to monitor limit angles. Inclination sensor models with CANopen interface are available for integration into commercial vehicle applications. Parameterisation of the inclination sensor is performed via CANopen or with teach-in buttons, depending on the sensor type.

The F99 series inclination and acceleration sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are accurate and easily programmable sensors for inclination and acceleration monitoring in the areas of mobile equipment, renewable energies and factory automation. Sensor highlights include:

* Customer specific configuration of measuring ranges and outputs.

* Innovative mounting concept provides protection against mechanical shock and vibration.

* High protection degree – IP68 and IP69K.

* Robust housing suitable for outdoor use.

* Extended temperature range of -40 to 85°C.

* Highly resistant to mechanical shock 100 g.

* Increased noise immunity – 100 V/m.

* European e1 approval for use on public roads.

Applications are found in:

* Commercial vehicles – to level cranes, liftgates and container-loading equipment.

* Construction machinery – to monitor the inclination position of excavators.

* Transport and loading units – for automatic horizontal alignment of inclination angle.

* Solar plants – for optimum solar tracking.

* Automotive production plants – to monitor rotation during assembly.

* Rail and marine vessels – to ensure even loading.

* Metal processing – to monitor the motion of stamping and pressing machines.
