Optical encoders with a bit parallel interface

February 2012 Sensors & Transducers

Posital’s OCD line of optical encoders with a bit parallel interface ensure fast, reliable transfer of angular position to higher-level controllers. In addition to a wide range of encoders for fieldbus and Ethernet environments, a revised, cost-efficient version featuring the proven bit parallel interface is now available. These devices are suitable for use in remote regions thanks to easy diagnosis options with simple tools.

An efficient design with few components ensures maximum on-site reliability, making the encoders ideal for use in machine construction, mobile machines or special vehicles. The encoders are based on a single turn sensor with a highly integrated Opto-ASIC which provides a resolution of 16 bit per revolution. Additionally, a maximum of 16 384 revolutions (14 bit) can be measured by a gear unit in multiturn versions. The optical sensor which features a code disc made from break-proof, dimensionally stable plastic provides excellent resolution, precision and dynamics.

The encoders comply with strict electromagnetic compatibility requirements: the protective circuits for power supply and interface connection allowing for reliable operation under adverse conditions. The interface design has been extended, adding TTL levels for the data outputs. Combined with a wide input voltage range, typical for the automation industry, this covers virtually all possible applications. Featuring push/pull technology, the encoders can be connected to standard I/O components from various controller manufacturers and are compatible with open collector versions. The robust units have a protection class of up to IP66. Direct mechanical integration into machines and plants is possible by means of gear wheels or suitable couplings. A control input at the encoder allows users to set the encoder’s position and the desired zero position within the machine.
