Digital positioner for emergency shutdown valves

February 2012 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

SVI II ESD – an extremely reliable instrument with true system interoperability from GE.

GE Energy has entered the safety system arena with the Masoneilan SVI II ESD digital positioner, the latest technology in emergency shutdown valve automation and in-service valve partial stroking. The SVI II ESD is a product extension of the successful and highly reliable SVI II AP valve positioner. The product, SIL3 compliant and designed in accordance with IEC 61508, is suitable for use in safety instrumented functions.

According to Sandro Esposito, GE Energy global product manager for digital products, the SVI II ESD is a breakthrough in that it allows for a single wire-pair solution for both partial stroke testing (PST) and the safety shutdown function with SIL3 compliance, virtually eliminating the need for solenoids. Also, by maximising artificial intelligence at the device level through analysis of incoming data from multiple sensors, the user receives not just data but usable and actionable information regardless of the PST execution method.

The SVI II ESD can be implemented using a 4-20 mA signal, 0-24 VDC or a combination of both. The single 4-20 mA solution is most desirable as it is SIL3 capable while at 4 mA, allowing the device to execute the safety function while active. Substantial benefits are realised in capturing shutdown events, allowing continuous HART communications during a trip and facilitating local panel annunciation using the built-in discrete outputs.

In terms of PST execution, the following are available: local LCD display, remote HART access, remote use of 4-20 mA analogue signal, and finally, built-in scheduler functionality. The SVI II ESD automatically captures the PST in its non-volatile memory and stores the analysis. Two signatures can be stored, allowing the Masoneilan Valvue ESD software to synchronise its database automatically with the field data. This software can be standalone or integrated. Furthermore, to minimise integration risks, GE Energy is devoted to supporting technologies such as EDDL and DTM.

The PST is implemented so that it does not interfere with the safety function as the architecture of the product segregates the two via dedicated processing functions. Finally, the SVI II ESD positioner complies with hazardous areas certifications ATEX, FM and CSA.
