Pressure Measurement & Control

Endress+Hauser's comprehensive life cycle management

January 2012 Pressure Measurement & Control

Pressure transmitter phase-out – a great opportunity for stock reduction.

Although phase-out is a natural step in any instrument’s life cycle, its arrival can be daunting for maintenance teams as they are rarely 100% prepared for it. Often, the installed base includes a large variety of instruments from different manufacturers increasing the risk for ‘shadow zones’ eg, forgotten instruments or lost user manuals. This state of affairs can lead to process uncertainty and also to unnecessary stock of replacement instruments and spare parts.

Endress+Hauser can offer a comprehensive life cycle management solution to this challenge. Primarily, it says it is in a position to propose 1-to-1 replacement solutions for each existing pressure transmitter. This ensures that any instrument without a successor can be exchanged and supported in the future to keep existing processes safe. Further, migration to Endress+Hauser instruments makes life easy as all instruments are easy to commission and to maintain.

The company can also assist to reduce the number of types of instruments on a site. Using a web enabled management system such as W@M can simplify the management of instrumentation, which can only save time and reduce the number of spares to be held in stock.

A simple solution

* Define, together with an Endress+Hauser representative, which instruments are critical to the processes and consider all specific constraints such as hazardous areas and so forth.

* Use E+H reference conversion tools to analyse replacement stock and spare parts and identify obsolete instruments.

* Several scenarios for rationalisation with details of financial gain according to scenario are then proposed.

* After consultation, the desired solution and timelines for implementation are defined.

Cost reduction example

In a power plant in Germany, the initial instrument list contained 214 types of pressure or differential pressure transmitters. Endress+Hauser proposed five different scenarios for potential savings using various criteria. The most suitable reduced the number of transmitters from 214 to maximum of 69 types, a reduction of 68%.
