Mass flowmeter for aggressive media

November 2011 Flow Measurement & Control

Aggressive or highly corrosive liquids, generally at high temperature, are common in the chemical industry. Only a few materials such as tantalum or zirconium have long-term resistance to such fluids. In these aggressive applications, the Promass H with sensor measuring tubes manufactured from corrosion-resistant tantalum or zirconium means that Coriolis flow measuring benefits need no longer be compromised by corrosion.

How to choose

In applications with particularly aggressive fluids, tantalum is the first choice. The tantalum alloy used for the Promass H consists of 2,5% tungsten and is fully compatible with common requirements. In the chemical industry, for example, tantalum is used in the facilities heat exchangers.

One-of-a-kind application areas

Hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid and chlorosulphuric acid, or aggressive bases, are just a few examples of chemicals that can be measured safely using the Promass H. Challenging applications in multipurpose plants where products are changing frequently can now be measured accurately and safely, for example in the manufacturing of fertilisers.

The Promass H, like other Coriolis flowmeters, has a secondary containment and all common Ex approvals. In addition, using HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus or Modbus, the measuring system can be integrated seamlessly into higher-level process control systems.

In the chemical industry production reliability is of the utmost importance. As a multivariable measuring device, the Promass H measures both the mass flow and the fluid density directly in the pipe. As the pH-value depends on the concentration of an acid or alkali, this density measurement also enables simultaneous and continuous product quality monitoring.

Promass H is available in sizes DN 8 to 50 and can be used at process temperatures up to 150°C (tantalum) or 200°C (zirconium).
