The acquisition by Pepperl+Fuchs of the Siemens proximity sensor business has enlarged its product portfolio in the fields of inductive proximity and photoelectric sensors, and strengthened its position in the market for factory automation ultrasonic sensors.
Pepperl+Fuchs and the Siemens Industry Automation Division signed an agreement on the acquisition of Siemens’ discrete proximity sensors for factory automation business by Pepperl+Fuchs. To begin, the parties agreed on an integration period during which both would prepare for the transfer of the business to Pepperl+Fuchs and during this period, Siemens continued to accept and execute all orders for proximity sensors. Now, at the end of the integration period, the responsibility of supply transfers to Pepperl+Fuchs and in future all orders will be executed as an extension of the company’s existing market offering.
“We wish to benefit from the technology spectrum, the highly qualified personnel and the strong market position of Siemens, above all in the field of ultrasonic sensors, to become even more competitive and profitable in this field,” said Dr. Gunther Kegel, CEO of Pepperl+Fuchs. Due to the acquisition of the binary proximity switch business from Siemens, Pepperl+Fuchs has the largest range of ultrasonic sensors on the market. A development team of nearly 30 qualified engineers concentrate on continuous development, where innovation in the field of ultrasonic transducers is playing a particularly important role. Whether it is the minimum short range or highest protection class, the features of an ultrasonic sensor decisively depend on the transducer used, because that is the actual sensor element. Pepperl+Fuchs has its own unique production line for transducers, making the company independent of suppliers.
Siemens CEO for the sensor business unit, Hans-Georg Kumpfmüller, responded that Pepperl+Fuchs as a leading specialist in the field of electronic sensors is ideally positioned to develop the binary sensor technology further in ways that will add value in the market.
