Conductivity sensor for pure water production

June 2001 Sensors & Transducers

For use in the food industry and, more specifically, in the production of pure and ultra-pure water, instrumentation and control specialists Endress+Hauser have released the CLS 16 conductivity sensor, a two-electrode conductivity measuring cell with a cell constant k = 0,1/cm, allowing a single sensor to be used over a broad measuring range.

John Immelman, Managing Director of Endress+Hauser, said the CLS 16 has FDA approval for all materials used in its construction and is particularly suited for pure water production applications such as ion exchange monitoring, distillation and water for injection as well as microchip cleaning.

"The insulation (PEEK) and the seal (EPDM) have FDA approval and the sensor's surface is polished to a surface roughness of Ra<0,8 µm, which conforms to the hygienic standards of 3 A and EHEDG. The sensor is machined from a single piece of stainless steel 316L, which is the same material that is used for all piping in ultra-pure applications," he said. "The sensor has a maximum pressure of 12 bar at 20°C, which makes the application range even wider. The CLS 16 has a maximum operating temperature of up to 120°C and can withstand short-term sterilisation up to 150°C."

According to Immelman, the sensor offers a measuring range of 0-500 µS/cm with a cell constant of k = 0,1/cm, which means the entire ion exchange plant can be fitted with one type of sensor. "The conductivity transmitter supplies the two-electrode measuring cell, CLS 16, with an alternating measuring voltage. The alternating current flowing through the measuring electrodes and the medium is determined by the conductivity of the medium."

Immelman added that this sensor is also the first non-pH sensor to use the TOP68 connector principle, which has the ease of installation of a separate cable, but provides IP68 protection when connected. "The CLS 16 also has the option of a fixed cable connection (IP67), the customer can select between a PT100 and PT1000 for temperature compensation and an optional calibration certificate for either one-point or three-point calibration is available."
