Heavy-duty pumps for mining

July 2011 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Alert Pumpmor, manufacturers of a comprehensive range of slurry, submersible, horizontal and vertical pumps, has extended its portfolio to include a new range of heavy-duty slurry pumps designed to cope with demands in the mining sector.

“The RXL heavy-duty series features a uniquely designed horizontal back suction unit widely used in the platinum and gold mining sectors,” says Fanie Nel, product manager at Alert Pumpmor, part of the Becker Group of companies. “Enhanced design features set these pumps aside from the conventional to ensure advanced performance in demanding environments.”

He adds that RXL back suction horizontal pumps, the only units in the Alert Pumpmor range to feature the design, are manufactured to a stringent set of specifications. What is important about the design is the pressure it takes off the stuffing box and away from the gland, these components now only being subject to the suction force. This makes these pumps perfectly suited for high pressure series installations with maximum casing pressures ranging from 15 bar on the standard low pressure unit to 25 bar on its high pressure counterpart.

The casing clamp construction enables easy replacement of wearing parts without having to dismantle the suction or discharge piping. In applications where pumps must be installed in series, the discharge of the first pump can be connected to the suction of the second pump with minimal pipe work and no pipe bends.

These pumps can handle solids ranging from 19 to 70 mm at heads up to 100 m and efficiencies up to 70%. Heavy-duty bearings have been provided for extended service life at maximum speed and full impeller diameter. Another important feature is the domed end cover that provides additional strength in high pressure applications. Thicker wall sections at wear points of the casing and impeller and replaceable suction and end cover liners protect from abrasion and wear.

The majority of spares are interchangeable to reduce inventory and ensure efficient on site repairs. Because all components are locally manufactured, the pumps are readily available and a large stock holding of spares and raw materials ensures timely delivery.

Typical applications include alumina plants, phosphate mining, cement slurries, coal dust slurries, soda and pot ash. The pumps are ideal for installation at remote locations.
