Drive designed for building applications

June 2011 Motion Control & Drives

Schneider Electric SA introduces Altivar 21 for easy, disturbance-free operation.

Schneider Electric South Africa has announced its variable speed drive range for 3-phase asynchronous motors from 0,75 to 75 kW – the Altivar 21. According to Rynhard Davids, product manager for drives and soft starters at Schneider Electric South Africa, the Altivar 21 range is an essential partner for pumping, heating and ventilation applications. “The range is specially designed for building applications, is simple to use, has immediate setup functionality, offers a direct integration in the line supply, does not require any costly accessories and, above all, ensures high performance and energy savings.”

From a ventilation application point of view, the product reduces noise pollution caused by airflow, motors and more. Its safety is also enhanced as the Altivar 21 range is equipped with the detection of transmission component breakage and smoke extraction. Adding to its user friendliness, the range offers an automatic restart and does away with the need for paddle valves.

Davids explains: “When it comes to heating and air conditioning applications, the Altivar 21 range’s performance is augmented as it connects to the building’s supervision network and optimises control when processing fluids. Furthermore, it utilises the PID regulator for temperature, flow rate, pressure and more. The range is also economical and rugged as it adjusts flow rates for better energy management and eliminates mechanical resonance.

“Within a pumping application, the Altivar 21 range brings safety to operation in that it detects under/overloads and loss of pump priming as well as motor switching. Limitation of low speed operating time and its sleep/wake-up function adds to energy efficiency. Once again, the range’s ease of use is illustrated through reference calibration and limitation as well as preset speeds.”

The reduced capacitor technology of the Altivar 21 range complies with standard IEC61000-3-12 and the switch kit can be integrated in the drive with no need for an additional external unit.
