Pipeline monitoring solutions

May 2011 Flow Measurement & Control

The clamp-on mounting technique allows the flow of oil and liquid hydrocarbons to be measured safely and accurately without the need to open pipes. Refineries are the centre of the petroleum industry and liquid flow process are typical for refineries making monitoring of pipelines crucial to smooth and safe process management. In addition to this, the applied metering equipment has to meet the strict safety directives (Atex) for use in Zone 1 hazardous areas.

Although inline flowmeters may have been installed on crucial pipelines when the refinery was constructed, plant extensions and new production procedures often require new flowmeters on pipelines that were not considered at that time. As a result, instruments which can be installed without the need to open pipes and thus stop production are required to fill the gaps in the process monitoring network. This makes the Katronic ultrasonic clamp-on flowmeter a good solution for various process applications. As the sensors are clamped to the pipe surface, refinery operators are not faced with large stoppage and mechanical construction including intensive engineering costs as is normally the case to install in-line flow instruments. There is additionally no risk of leakage, blockage or down-time for maintenance.

The Katronic flowmeter is accurate to ±0,5% when calibrated correctly, fully Atex certified and can typically be installed within an hour by one person without stopping the production process. (Integral setup software wizard assists with the placement of the sensors for optimal performance.) The KATflow 150 is designed with the process industry in mind, offering flexible power options (AC, DC, solar or battery powered with consumption <5 W) and suitable for pipe sizes 10 to 3000 mm. The units can be deployed in various applications from simple metering to concentration measurements; a range of standard process output protocols is provided for easy integration.
